Where Do I Start?
If you are new to genealogy, then your first question must be:
"Where do I start?"
The best advice is to start with what you know. You have, undoubtably, heard family stories all your life. Begin by recording what you remember and asking others to add to those stories. Ask any and all relatives you come in contact with to share their stories with you; share your stories with them as well. You'll find that, in no time, you have amassed a wonderful collection of family tales and traditions that will guide your research!
As for the actual research needed to document your family tree, there is one hard and fast rule: DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT!!! Attempt to find proof for any assertions you make. Be certain to take copies of documents you find that pertain to ancestors you may be researching. Write down page numbers and bibliographic information from books that have information pertaining to your ancestors. Keep one thought in mind at all times: Without documentation, a family history is but a story containing many names!
